I tried to setup DNN 3.1 for a proof-of-concept I am doing at work.  However, I could not get it to work at all.  I am using IIS 5.1 on Windows XP Pro, MSDE 2000a.  I thought I had the security set up correctly, but apparently not.  I have given Everyone full control of the directory and I still get a forbidden message when I try to access the page locally or remotely.  I've read through the documentation, which is not included in the package without source by-the-way (it should be), but I found no answers.  If you need some more info just let me know, some help on this would be greatly appreciated.

1) Did you rename the release.config to web.config?

2) Did you create a database in MSDE and the user to access the database?  Does the user have db owner permissions so it can create all the tables / sprocs.

3) You need to update the connectionString property so it hits the database created above?

4) What is the exact error you are getting?

Another option would be for you to use SQLExpress 2005 instead of MSDE.  This is a scaled down version of SQL and there is also a GUI interface you can download similar to Enterprise Manager.  If your proof of concept ended up being  what you wanted the real site to look like, and you went with DNN you could Migrate the data to a SQL server easier.  I also think if this is going to be a site without small to moderate traffic, you might get away with going live using SQLExpress.

Thanks for the response,

1. Yes, I renamed the file accordingly.
2. I decided to uninstall MSDE and just use SQL Server 2000, which I then created a db with an sa password.
3. I updated the connectionString to point to the db I created using the sa account and password.
4. I was getting the "You do not have permission to access this page" error before I fixed the NTFS permissions.  Now, all I see is the actual code in Default.aspx.

It was suggested to me that I do not have ASP extenstions installed in IIS.  However, I could not find how to install these.  It seems like this would be the case, since all I see is code it doesn't seem like IIS is processing the aspx pages.

Well, I uninstalled and reinstalled IIS and followed the install guide for DNN 3.1 exactly.  I still cannot get it to work.  All I see is an HTTP 403 (Forbidden) error.  Is this a limitation of XP Pro, or am I doing something seriously wrong here?

Ok, well after extensive Googleing, I found the answer.  This probably applies to all Windows XP Pro webservers.

After installing IIS:
1. open a command prompt
2. navigate to C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v1.1.4322\
3. run "aspnet_regiis.exe -i"   (w/out quotes)

Apparently, installing IIS doesn't register the .Net framework with IIS nor update the scriptmaps.  After I did step 3, my page loaded and installed successfully.
Also something to note, in Windows XP Pro running IIS v5.1, the ASPNET user account is the only account that needs read/write/modify rights to the DNN directory.

Another way IIS could have gotten messed up is if you reinstalled IIS after you installed the .Net framework.  It is easy to fix though by using the aspnet_regiis utility.  If you install IIS then the ..Net framework, IIS should be set to use .Net without any other changes.  Glad you got it working, enjoying using DNN.
