Does anyone know of a module that does the following (...and if not - is anyone interested in building one, either as an open-source, funded joint-venture or as a developer-for-hire project).

I need to store formatted data in the DB, and then have the ability to export that data to a PDF document, complete with predefined company headers, various bits of pre-defined text (signatures, disclaimers, etc). My specific needs are medico-legal in nature, but I can imagine that just about all businesses that produce documents (there are hundreds) could use this facility.

By "formatted" I mean headings, bold/italic, indentation levels, etc (all of which is supported in the text entry utility). Other "would-be-nice" features are an archive of produced PDF's, an ability to email the PDF to any email target (assuming an available SMTP server, obviously) and probably some other really neat ideas I haven't thought of. The ability to "and/or" export to a Word doc would be great too.

I know for sure Microsoft Reporting Services allows to to design the report in Visual Studio 2003 and then allowing export to various formats such as PDF, Excel, HTML, etc.  The Reporting Services works is like Crystal or Imprompto software.  This software is a free addon to license MS SQL server.  The report data can come from MS SQL, Access, dBase, Oracle, DB2, or MySQL etc..  To allow the reports display inside DNN, I have built a Reporting Service DNN module.  You can download the module as well as running demos at http://corpdnn.icpconline.com.  There are 7 online demos there for you to try out.  Once the report is displayed, select a pdf format and then click on Export link button.

Thanks for that and you've developed what certainly looks like a great module. I'm from a Cognos background so I can really see the value in what you've done.

However the reports I'm thinking of are far more along the lines of text documents - legal briefs, medical opinions, etc. (ie - not reports generated from numerical data). These are documents that have definite elements of standard text (an example is below) and other elements are freely generated based on the findings. I would love to have the ability to generate PDF documents complete with headers, footers and elements of standard text.

Do you think this is also possible using your module?

Our Reporting Services DNN module is simply a utility to control access and display reports inside DNN portal.  It can not be used to design or generate reports. 

The real power is in MS Reporing Services software.  This tool is integrated into Visual Studio 2003.  To design reports, you would use Visual studio IDE and the publish the reports to the Report server.  Then my module retrieves the report catalog from the report server and then display them in DNN.  For what you described, the MS Reporting Service should be able to handle it.  Both trial MS SQL server and MS Reporing Service are available from http://www.microsoft.com/sql/reporting/default.mspx.  Am I sounding like Microsoft sales guy?

Let me give you an example of how we are using the reporting services.  We use report service to print out purchase request/purchase order.  On the form, there are signature blocks for submitter, supervisor and manager.  The form data (vendor, line items, etc.) are dynamic data generated from db into PDF.
