Cannot add a new module definition??

hello
I try to add a new module definition.
I got error message "Input string was not in a correct format."
when I typed the "New Definition" field.

What should I do for handling this situation?

I know that this is not the exactly answer - but hopefully it will provide some insite into DotNetNuke Errors.

When you get an error message like this - it is really difficult to pinpoint. Another famous one is object reference not set to an instance of an object - ot the elusive - type integer cannot be converted to DBNull.

The way I solve generic error messages like this - is to follow logical steps to try and pinpoint the error. The problem is that no matter how good you get - you can never be sure what the exact issue is- because the description is so generic can the issue in question - could be anywhere in the business logic - or the data access layer.

So here is what I would consider doing

Step 1. What file are you trying to access - typically a custom module has 3 files - settings.ascx , moduleName.ascx(view) , moduleEdit.ascx(your edit ascx)

Step 2. Open this ascx and go to the code behind page load event - and comment out any lines that are calling a function in the controller.vb

Step 3. Load the page again - and see if you at least get a display without error. - If you do - you can start pinpointing the error message.
If not then you can try to see if their is something in the design view - that is causing the conflict - and a lot of the times this could be from a repater control - or something other than pure HTML - make sure your asp controls have ID's and runat server attributes.

Step 4. You can now look at the code and make sure it all routes correctly through the controller.vb - and that the correct info object has been defined (beyond the scope of this article) - and then check that the code is going to the dataProvider - with the correct must override constructors - and the correct function return values.

Now - make sure that if you are making any structural changes - you remove the module Project reference in your dataProvider project. Drop it - then rebuild just the project - then add it again to the SQLDataProvider as a reference.
This is important - else you will have compiler issues.

Step 6 - check to see if the build paths are correct for both projects - this is another great basic issue - some people(like me) overlook.

Step 7 - if everything is flowing - check the Stored Proc - you might have overlooked something small and its not returning data - or there is a logical problem of some kind.

I find this more often than not to be attributed to not supplying a numeric value for Default Cache Time.

The Cache field HAS TO have a value, so if you dont want it to Cache, then put a zero in there.

This essentially makes the Cache a required field.

Apparently this is considered a bug, and will be fixed in an upcoming release.
