Best way to make a link

Hi, can anyone please help.
I'm trying to create a detail page, in which I want to display a link to a website.
The link will be pulled out of a database, so I already have it in an info object.

Lets's say it is called: Institute.Weburl

Now I would like to know the beste way to put it on my page.
I've tried:

a html anchor (<a runat="server" id="lnkWeburl" target="_blank"...etc.)
a asp:hyperlink (<asp:hyperlink id="lnkWeburl"... etc.)
a label with DotNetNuke.Common.Globals.FormatWebsite(Institute.Weburl), but this wouldn't open in a new browser

I've also looked at some stuff about Linkclick.aspx which would use URLTracking. But I don't exactly know how to use it, and it seems a lot of trouble for just putting a link on a page.

So, does anyone have any ideas....can anyone explain how I could use linkclicks, etc. Please let me know

Sounds like you would best use the hyperlink server control. Place it where you want on the page, then in the Page_Load event fill your info object and set the NavigateURL property of the hyperlink to the weburl property of the info object. Code snippet from Page_Load event:

linkOnPage.NavigateUrl = oInfo.WebUrl

You can set the server control's target to blank, so it opens in a new window.

Thanks for your contribution Ling.

You need to make sure however that the Url is formatted correctly. It needs to start with http://, otherwise this wouldn't work.
So you need to use some function like this:

Function FormatURL(ByVal Link As String) As String
      If Not Link.StartsWith("http://") Then
           Link = "http://" & Lin
      End If

      Return Link.ToString
End Function

But I was wondering if this is the 'standard' way to do this, or if there is some other way (perhaps with linkclick).
I also found another function (dnn4):

DotNetNuke.Common.Utilities.HtmlUtils.FormatWebsite()

Perhaps this would be something?

If anyoune has suggestions, or can explain what these functions do, please let me know.

Have you tried the link module? No, it will not reach into your custom data table, but it will store the url in the DNN table (Links). I am not sure what it is that you are seeking. A standard approach for DNN is to utilize the links module. Outside of that, you are now into non-DNN standards. And, at that point, the sky's the limit on how you want to approach the link. Write your own module...rewrite the links module...copy/paste into a text/html box...it's up to you what size brush you want to use and the color of the paint.

DotNetNuke.Common.Utilities.HtmlUtils.FormatWebsite()??? It's just a link control. My suggestion is to keep it simple.

method simply creates a string containing a properly formed HTML anchor tag with the href attribute set to the the Website parameter with the addition of http:// if not already present. This is what I've been using to create a link which is then databound to a datagrid, datalist, etc. There is also the

Public Function FormatEmail(ByVal Email As String) As String

which creates a mailto: link from an EMail address with the added benefit that it obfuscates the EMail address through Javascript concatenation of ASCII codes.
