Hi guys

I've got windows 2000 & installed SQL server.

Tried installing Starter kit commerce database. Prompts " select local instance where you would have commerce db installed". I select 'localhost' from dropdown menu. When i test connection an error message appears "unsuccessful database connection". Can anyone help? Not sure why, because mssql server is running and visibily active in desktop startup. I think its something to do with password with sql server that I had trouble with before.

I had the same issue. I'm not sure what causes it but install your commerce as remote then follw the instructions that come to setup your database. Make sure you create the commerce user or a user with access to that db on your server. You will need to modify your web.config to set the new credentials. that should be it.

Hi billyray,

I had the same prob during my 1st installation attempt. My fault was not to set INSTANCENAME=myinstance while starting msde setup. In the connection test dropdown menu there was only 'localhost' and my connection test failed.

So I uninstalled the MSDE, installed it again with the instance parameter and after that I found this entry: MSSQL$myinstance in the SERVICES list. My following Commerce Starter Kit installation went well, because my SERVER\INSTANCE was now available.

I guess that you have no USER\PASSWORD but an INSTANCE prob.

The install program is trying to reach the SQL server through a network connection. Run setup with the DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOL=0 and it will enable programs to access it through network protocols.

I've tried to set INSTANCENAME=myinstance and also DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOL=0 in the setup command prompt but the database connection still fails.

The SERVER\myinstance is now available but when I test the connection it fails.

Any ideas?

I don't actually want to use SQL server but I can't seem to get the Access version to work. So any ideas on either of these would be useful.

I'd recommend choosing the remote option as someone mentioned earlier and then just change the connection manually in the web.config file.

Have you had any luck, I have the same problem and selecting remote comes up with the same problem.
I downloaded MSDE and installed as per the instructions, changed the password and security setting...any more ideas appreciated!
How do you get to SERVER/INSTANCE?

I've been having problems installing the ASP.NET Portal, getting the "unsuccessful database connection" message and "Connection Failed".

Uninstall MSDE and try againg with this:

Setup SAPWD="password" INSTANCENAME=MyLocalSQL

It worked for me!
