Menu and IE712/12/2006 1:15:01 AM

0/0

Hi All,

I have an ASP.NET 2.0 Menu using the Menu CSSAdapter.  It works fine in Firefox and IE6 however when viewing the site in IE7 the fold out menu items do not appear.  Is this a known issue or is there something I am missing?

Thanks,

Jesse

The menu adapter has been tested and used extensively with IE7.  If your menu isn't working with IE7 you should start by visiting this page, http://www.asp.net/cssadapters/menu.aspx.  That is the live sample page for the adapted menu. It should work for you with IE7.  If it does, then your job boils down to figuring out what is different in your pages.

You might want to double-check that you are using the RTM 1.0 verison of the adapters, not the previous (beta) releases.  The betas did have problems with IE7.

You can upgrade to the RTM by installing the latest download from http://ww.asp.net/cssadapters.  Then create a new CSS Friendly web site in VS.  Copy its files into your existing web site at the same locations.  For more precise instructions see http://www.asp.net/cssadapters/whitepaper.aspx#SamplesUsingInYourWebSite.

Write back to let us know how it works out for you.  Good luck!

Thanks Russ,

I have downloaded the most recent version of the adapters but still couldn't figure out why it wasn't working.  After much trial and error in finding it's cause I found out that the line in the master page below, if omitted, causes the issue:

<!

DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">

Early on in my project I removed this line so that I could get a footer bar anchor to the bottom of the screen.  Without it the fold out menus don't work in IE7.  I assume this was never considered.  The problem now I have is that if I put that line back in my master page my footer comes up to just below the content whereas I want it to anchor to the bottom of the browser window.  If anyone knows how that would be handy.  I hope this post might be able to help people who had the same issue as I did.

 Regards,

Jesse

Removing your DOCTYPE entirely tends to be a bad thing when you are using sophisticated CSS in modern browsers.

On the other hand, I can totally believe that you were having some problems with the DOCTYPE shown above.

There are alternatives (happily).  The DOCTYPE shown above is used for docs that are adhering to what is called XHTML 1.1.  This is also known as adhering to "strict" mode.

You may be better off using one of the more lenient DOCTYPE varients, instead.  For example, using XHTML 1.0 Transitional is rather common.  It is specified as:

<!

DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

DOCTYPE variations and their impact on the rendering in browsers is comparable to building a rocket capable of sending people back through time.  That is to say, DOCTYPE signatures are not simple. I am very sympathetic with authors who struggle with them.  Here is a link that might help (or might confuse you further), http://www.w3.org/QA/Tips/Doctype.  From that page you can go to others that delve into the wonders and mysteries of DOCTYPE ramifications.

It's hard to say exactly why the footer behaved as it did on your page. That it changed when you changed the DOCTYPE suggests that you may have something not quite right in its CSS... but without seeing all your markup and CSS it would be hard to say exactly what might be amiss.  Still, removing a DOCTYPE entirely tends to be a bad solution in the end 'cause it causes other problems (like you are now seeing with the misbehaving menus in IE7).
