Visual Studio 2005 Freezing (most of the time)

I am running Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition and I am having trouble as it is freezing quite a lot.

I have the freezing issue when I save files or change what I am doing. By 'change what I am doing' I really mean anything. I might be editing a file and then click on a file in the Solution Explorer and then the IDE will freeze. I might just change between files that I am working (using the file tabs). I would say that the freezing occurs more often when I am working on projects that contain a large number of files.

The freezing is very frustrating as I literally have to sit and wait, or make a coffee.

I have installed SP1 and have not noticed any difference. I have also followed the steps outlined on '.Net Tip of the Day': http://dotnettipoftheday.org/tips/speedup_visual_studio.aspx. I did notice a difference from the changes suggested, the IDE runs faster but I still get my freezing problem as often.

My PC does not have the greatest spec, it has a Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz with 2GB RAM, but I think it should be sufficient. I have experienced the same problem on new and faster PCs too.

If anyone has any ideas or advice I will be very grateful.

Hi,

If we disable Add-ns (?Tools? | ?Add-in Manager?) and run ?devenv.exe /safemode?, do we still have the problem? This can eliminate the possibility that third party Add-ins are causing problems.

We can run devenv /resetskippkgs to merge the resource metadata that describes menus, toolbars, and command groups from all VSPackages available.

We also can try to run devenv /resetsettings (Commonly, it makes sense than re-installation) or devenv /setup in Visual Studio Command Prompt.

We also can try to run "devenv.exe /log <full path to log file>" to generate log file to troubleshoot this issue.

Thanks for your message, but sorry I only just saw it today.

I will try the steps you have suggested and let you know how I get on. I am just trying the safemode option at the moment.

I have worked through all your suggestions and the log file follows this message.

I did find that Safemode made a difference, the freezing seemed to happen less often (I do not have any Add-ins installed though). Once I ran the command '/resetsettings' everything was slower in general so I again applied the tips from 'Dot Net Tip of the Day' (http://dotnettipoftheday.org/tips/speedup_visual_studio.aspx).

So after the changes I am still experiencing the freezing. I have looked through the log file but it does not really mean a great deal to me.

If you have any other suggestions I would really appreciate your input.

Hi,

Based on the error log, I see that there are a couple of unexpected system errors before loading package, such as Visual Studio Macros Package, Visual Basic Compiler Package, etc.

Did you run devenv /resetskippkgs to merge the resource metadata that describes menus, toolbars, and command groups from all VSPackages available?

If this doesn't help you, you also can consider repairing or resetting your VS.

Hi Thomas

I did run devenv /resetskippkgs but I then ran devenv /resetsettings as well.

I have run devenv /resetskippkgs again and generated the log file and the 'unexpected system errors' are no longer present (sorry I did not see these the first time).

With this change I will see how I get on today. Do you think that the errors that were recored could be the cause of the freezing I am experiencing? Is the freezing a known issue?

Did you get the error again when you run the command line? It is hard to find the root cause.

Hi again Thomas,

I ran devenv /resetsettings again and this time round there were no errors recorded in the generated log file.

Using Visual Studio debugger sounds a great idea - I have should have thought of that really. I will see how I get on with debugging and post any updates.
