Trying to install NFS 3.0 on Netware 5.1 SP7 with NDS 8.85c, 'SCHINST.NLM'
fails:

Error: "Failed to add schema attribute UNIX:UID. An error occurred
modifying the NDS schema for file sys:system\schema\nds4s.sch.
Error Description unknown error -708 (fffffd3c hex). (DSI-5.00-185)."

All documented workarounds tried with no success.

Can I somehow use a tool like NDS Schema Manager to manually add the
extensions using the data in sys:\system\schema\nds4s.sch? If so
is there a paper somewhere that describes the procedures and
cautions to follow?

From a workstation yoiu can use the ndssch.exe utility in sys:public .

Thanks for your reply. Tried it as follows:

ndssch NDS4S.SCH
Failed to add schema attribute UNIX:UID.

What should I be looking at to further troubleshoot this issue?
Would it help to post any logs to the newsgroup?

Overview:

1. 'SCHINST.NLM' fails during setup of NFS 3.0 on NW 5.1 SP7 NDS 8.85c:
Error: "Failed to add schema attribute UNIX:UID. An error occurred
modifying the NDS schema for file sys:system\schema\nds4s.sch.
Error Description unknown error -708 (fffffd3c hex). (DSI-5.00-185)."

-- workarounds from TIDs and other sources didn't help.

2. Successfully extended the schema using the three files from NFS 3.0 named
NDS4S.SCH NIS.SCH NISEXT.SCH using workstation command 'ndssch.exe'
(previously failed due to insufficient rights of logged-in user).

3. 'SCHINST.NLM' reports successful extensions to the schema for each of
the above three files, but still fails to complete (unknown what it would
do if it completed).

4. Unix profile property tabs now work in ConsoleOne; assigned UID=0 to
'Admin', created 'root' group and assigned it to 'Admin'. Exported a
filesystem.

5. NFS NLMs are loaded, (NIS disabled - only interested in NFS server), but
'rpcinfo -p' from a Unix host shows only 'rpcbind' service. 'dfshares'
on a Unix host also (of course) shows nothing from the NFS server.

6. Have not applied any of the available Service Packs to NFS 3.0 yet as I
suspected I would need to make it work first -- am I mistaken?

The following logs are available at ftp://ftp.cybertheque.org/pub/novell/debugging/

1. SchemaExtensionsReport.txt (from NDS Manager)
2. console.log (shows boot and all loaded modules)
3. config.txt (output from CONFIG.NLM)
4. nfs30-install-notes.txt (detailed messages from commands run to extend schema,
etc).

I really appreciate the help from readers of this newsgroup and hope to get NFS
running; I have been happy with NFS 1.0 on NW 3.12 which has served us well for
nearly ten years, but due to problems mounting a perfectly healthy 36GB traditional
volume after an abend, had to be replaced with this NW 5.1 configuration. We
don't have the option to migrate from NW 5.1 to anything newer right now and so
I am very grateful for the assistance.

Thanks for they reply. Indeed that document was one of the first that I
consulted when I had this problem. Please see me last post elsewhere in
this thread for more details.

Sorry, DNS screwup -- for a few days you will need to use the IP address
instead:
ftp://216.251.177.106/pub/novell/debugging

Since the time that those files were created, I've installed nfs30sp6
in an attempt to move forward. Now I have an issue of the SCHINST.NLM
failing again, and this time I can't install the .SCH files using
'ndssch.exe' due to some of them containing DS_AUXILIARY_CLASS flags.

In any case, getting this installed is a real nightmare.
