New to Web Parts Question on User Controls11/15/2007 9:37:59 PM

0/0

I?m new to Web Parts.  I have a question I can?t find the answer to.

I have a user control that requires a User ID to be passed to it.  When I use the ?user control? in my web parts page, how do I pass that value WITHOUT setting the control into a random Zone at design time?

I would like to have my zones set up with nothing in them and then allow the user to use the ?CatalogZone? to select what components to use.  Am I on the right track with this stuff?

Thank you.

Hi

You could write your own catalogpart class and override the getwebpart method, identify there when the usercontrol is beeing added and set the User ID property of the usercontrol. But then you would probably (depends on project model) need to write a base class with an overridable proberty (userid)that inherits from the usercontrol class and your usercontrol in turn inherits from and overrides the property, then make an instance of the base class and put loadcontrol("somecontrol.ascx") in it and set the property in the getwebpart method. This is probably overkill for your situation tough. When do you know the value of User ID and where do you store it? Can you not get to the value in UserID from your code_behind of the user control and just use it where you need in the life cycle of the usercontrol? Do you want the user to be able to change the value of UserID, if so you can make the property on the user control personalizable and webbrowsable so it will show up in the propertygrideditor for the webpart and you can pass the userid to the usercontrol from there. Sorry about all the rambling, hope it helps more then it confuses.
