installing VS80-KB915364-X86-ENU.exe ends with the following error:

The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the
program to be upgraded bay be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different
version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your
computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.

from a regmon log  the installation package searches and cannot find the following product guid in the registry:

I have VS 2005 team suite 8.0.50727.42  and looking in the regsitry its guid is 3097481114E43F2459F2FF406224662B.
This guid doesn't appear in the above list of guids serched by the fix, but the download page says it is supported.

Moreover I've checked other machines with VS 2005 team suite 8.0.50727.42 but in the registry it appears that the guid is different , it is
E2612681CBB3F844AA36943F13255DA4 and it apears in the above list.

What is the problem here?
Can someone in MS  check what product is 3097481114E43F2459F2FF406224662B and why it isn't supported by VS80-KB915364-X86-ENU.exe

I've not heard of this problem before.  I just want to make sure. Are you installing this on the English SKU?

Yes, its English.

About "copy info" reports in the first 4 lines it is an RTM but it is not. While the "Product Code" 55603-000-0000016-00190  just after Microsoft Visual C# 2005 I'm sure it is not and RTM versione but I don't know exaclty what it is.

I don't know what 55603-000-0000016-00190  is but it's not a Product Code.  I do know that the patch will only install on RTM.  You might try using msiinv.exe which will provide information about the state of all Windows Installer products.

It might also be help if you could capture a verbose log of the patch installation.

To verbosely log, use /L*v <filename.log>.

Use /L switch to msiexec.exe, or if using the patch EXE it will already be in the %TMP%\<patch filename> directory. You can also pass the /L option to the patch EXE.

Thanks to the incredibly ambiguous Microsoft error message, I wasted several hours today running in circles trying to fix this problem.  In the end, I found out that the version of Visual Studio that Microsoft bundled with SQL Server 2005, the premier partner edition, is pretty much crap.  Nowhere in the install of SQL server does it let you choose whether or not to install this version, and nowhere does it indicate that it will be a stripped down version that has none of the standard programming languages or support for web applications.  And once it's running, it never even bothers to try to sell you this enhancement.  It just installs itself as plain old VS 2005 and gives ambiguous errors when you try to install the updates that Microsoft provides to "make VS handle web applications the same way that .Net 2003 does."  Very silly and wasteful.

 With the rant behind me, here is the info.  If you go to Help->About and dont see any programming languages (Visual Basic, C++, etc.) listed as installed components, then you are probably running the crappy version, as I was.  Uninstall this version, and reinstall plain old Visual Studio 2005 from stand-alone Visual Studio 2005 media.  Then your problems will be behind you.
