Do you use the designer?8/10/2005 8:48:22 PM

I'm asking a stupid question without doing much research... but I was wondering if most people use the designers in VS or hand-code their ASP.NET v2.0 sites?

This has been my experience:

I use the designer for rapid prototyping/small sites (<10 pages).  Anything more than that and I define my controls in cs files (inheriting from UserControl), and then add them via code to the appropriate aspx/ascx files; this allows for more flexibility by being able to include multiple instances of controls either on the same page or on seperate pages (leads to better code reuse).  If you need a simple example of this let me know.  YMMV.

Snag yourself a CS Tidbit!

Assuming you're talking about developing web pages; I seldom use the designer - instead I usually have Firefox, Explorer and Opera running in the background to preview the site as I go along, writing the markup by hand. This way I feel more in control and can be confident that the site will look just like I want it across different browsers.

On the other hand, for Windows Forms development the designer is invaluable :)

the designer mode in 1.1 was pretty subpar to say the least, i've gotten quite pissed that event wireups would unwire itself whenever you make a slight change in the design mode sometimes, and that it would also re-write my html! so i've gotten used to handing coding all the controls and manually declaring everything that is needed in the code behind, and hooking up all the events myself. but now that the 2.0 architecture has cleaned up alot of the mess and making use of xhtml, it may be worth it to do everything via design mode (except for nested master pages), but old habits die hard.. so it'll be awhile for me.

also, you get to learn a whole lot more hand coding your projects;)

Thanks for all the replies.  I've done all my wb coding to date by hand coding ASP (VBScript) in Notepad, but I would like something that enforces xhtml compliance if possible.  I've been holding off learning ASP.NET because all the hosting is so expensive, but I think it's probably time I take the leap of faith.  As I'm working on my sites, I keep hearing things about ASP.NET v2.0 that sound like they'd be MUCH easier than doing it in ASP.

Visual Web Developer 2005 has a html editor which is superb, with xhtml validation schemas and intellisense built in :)
