Hi all.........I do have my site up and running (DNN 4.0.1 on W2K Server)......I used the starter kit and VS 2005.  Now I am going to do my first upgrade to DNN 4.0.2 and have to admit, I have to think about this quite a bit before doing it......right.   I was thinking about doing a test upgrade on my local machine (Win XP) before attempting the live upgrade.  Are there significant differences between upgrading IIS 5  (the W2K) as opposed to IIS 6?  Would it be better to copy the live site over to the XP machine, do the upgrade and just copy it back using VS? or is my thinking wrong and I am making too much of this?  Since this is the first time I did this....it is a bit nerve wracking.

you can do a test upgrade on your local machine, but you should upgrade your production server in place. have a look into the installation manual (included into the documentation pack) for further reference.

To upgrade your production site, follow this steps:

  • disable external access to your portal
  • backup your site and database
  • ensure, the backup succeeded
  • re-install the starter kit, overwriting the existing
  • open your sie in VS2005 should update your site
  • rename your web.config into bak.config
  • copy release.config to web.config
  • copy all specific items from bak.config into web.config:
    • encryption keys
    • database connection string
    • object qualifier (if adopted)
    • any other custom modifications
  • hit your site, upgrade of database and re-installation of modules shall take place
  • follow the link at the bottom of the page to start your portal
  • if everything went well, enable external access
  • if anything went wrong, shout "***" and restore your backup
