development, test, and production IIS servers5/7/2004 2:37:21 AM

I would like to host a department DotNetNuke portal on our intranet. We have separate IIS servers for test and production environments. I installed DotNetNuke 2 just fine on my PC (as a development environment). What is the recommended way to set up test and production IIS servers initially?

a. Install DotNetNuke directly on the test and production servers using separate databases?
b. Build the portal on my PC, do something like zip it, and install on the test server, and then same thing from test to production (one database or 3 databases?)?
c. Install DotNetNuke only on my PC and administer all 3 environments from my PC using one database?
d. None of the above.

Thanks!

Katherine

I tried a shot at answering my own questions today. Could someone please comment if I'm missing the boat or saying something wrong in this response?

Here is what I think I learned so far as a newbe:
- A DotNetNuke 2.x install supports multiple portals for one web site (but can access the one site with multiple URLs).
- DNN uses a separate database for each site.
- You need to copy files from the development PC to a directory accessible from the test server (ex. xcopy, ftp). DotNetNuke does not include features to do this step. After the files are copied, you can use DNN to update the site files and database.

Here is what I did today to build a test environment from a development environment. I kept the install simple - just set up the dotnetnuke application first.

I am assuming that I would delete the IIS virtual directory for dotnetnuke and add another virtual directory for my own portal when I install my own application portal on the test server.

TEST SERVER SOFTWARE INSTALLED:
Windows 2000 SP4
IIS 6
..Net Framework 1.1
SQL Server 2000 SP3a
Access 2000 SR1

FILE COPY:
1. Copy DotNetNuke Windows directory files from the development PC to a Windows DotNetNuke2_0_4 directory on the test server.
2. Remove files (per www.asp.net/forums/showpost.aspx?tabindex=1&postid=553773)

WEB SET UP:
3. Give ASPNET userid full control privileges on the root DotNetNuke2_0_4 directory in Windows Explorer.
4. Create an IIS virtual directory for the root DotNetNuke2_0_4 Windows directory.
5. Test brower access to localhost/DotNetNuke (accessing the Access database as the first test).

DATABASE SET UP:
6. On the test server, create a new database called DotNetNukeTest (using SQLServer Enterprise).
7. Add the ASPNET userid as a login in the master database and userid in DotNetNukeTest database (using SQLServer Enterprise).
8. Edit the data defaultprovider and connectionstring to select the SQL Server database in the web.config file.
9. Test brower access to localhost/DotNetNuke (accessing the SQL Server database as the first test).

Thanks to everyone who contributed to GettingStarted and Dummies write ups. I greatly appreciated your help! Hopefully, this information helps someone else.
