Simple download too difficult to use10/19/2004 2:20:51 PM

To get files onto the download list is a total nightmare. you have to go through so many pages and far too many steps to get files onto the list of downloads. Is there a module that will simply list all the files in the relevan portal's uploaded files directory without having to select each one, give it a name etc. I cant see non technically minded people coping with the current method.

Unfortunately it's due to browser security that you have to select 1 file at a time. To upload multiple files, either a java applet or activex control is typically needed, or alternatively multiple INPUT TYPE=FILE lines. DNN tries to help a little by seperating the selection and upload, but it is still frustrating. If you have a lot of files you wish to upload at once, zip them up and upload the zip, make sure the 'Decompress ZIP Files?' checkbox is checked and the files will be uncompressed. Alternatively if you put the files in via another method such as FTP, then on the file manager, you can click the 'Synchronize Database And File System' button to make sure the files are usuable in the portal.

In DNN 3, there are a number of additions to the filemanager to make it easier to move, copy, delete, rename files and build up folder structures.

at kodhedz.net there is a free module called filedirectorytree that you can display the contents of the portal upload dir, or a sub folder for download in a tree view. its quite simple, but a few options and it does what i need it to... cheers

You can manage your portal files with Speerio File Manager Pro DNN (http://www.speerio.net/default.aspx?tabid=670)

file manager is good but Prolly i saw recently that he embedded it into his new text editor so it might be a better value to wait until that is on the market.

One feature I will have to code for if no one has is a way to upload a whole folder, does anyone have that?

Hi Daniel,

You will not be able to use the embedded file management capabilities outside the NukeEdit editor as it's a different control that provides the functionality in the editor (File Selector) versus in the File Manager Pro module.

Uploading a folder is not a feature in most file management apps because it requires invoking ActiveX on the client browser which is disabled on most people's browsers. It is trivially simple to get a list of files from the user's computer with ActiveX enabled, but without it or some other client-side mechanism, AFAIK, it is not feasible.

Thx Nik,

Hehe, i thought that might spur a response from you :)

Hey, so, invoking ActiveX actually might be ok for me since the only users I want using this feature are my webmasters. Can you lead me in the right direction to explore this more?

do a quick google and you'll find lots. My company uses fileup pro (http://fileup.softartisans.com/fileup-148.aspx), which is pricey but very good. A more reasonably priced alternative is http://www.aurigma.com/Products/ImageUploader/ . Theres also a very cheap java applet @ http://www.javazoom.net/applets/jclientupload/jclientupload.html that might be worth a look.

Hi Cathal,

I'm looking for such a tool too (multiple file upload) and I was wondering if it is so difficult to create an ActiveX control myself in VB.NET? (I understand that activeX was the way to go before .NET, but showing a simple "openfiledialog" without activeX seems to be impossible...

I know it is usally cheaper to buy a third party product, but I want to make my webapplication myself as an exercise...

Thanks

I could be wrong here, but my understanding of it is that you need classic VB to create an activeX component. This is because it's a COM component, and can therefore be understood by win32 clients natively. You can create vb.net controls that can be hosted within IE, but then that requires all the visiting clients to have the .net framework installed. If you're just creating a file upload that'll be used by a limited group, then it might be an option. Take a look @ http://www.15seconds.com/issue/030610.htm as a starting point.
